Frequently asked questions

What should I expect from a manual therapy session?

In your first session we will review your general health and wellbeing and discuss your relevant medical history to get a good understanding of your body and individual needs.

If you are happy to proceed, we will begin treatment.  We may ask you to remove items of clothing that restrict access to the areas of the body we will be working on, and we will leave the room while you do this and get comfortable on the couch.  Towels are used to cover your body, for comfort and warmth and we will continue to check you are feeling happy, safe and comfortable during the treatment.

Once the treatment is complete we will discuss any further treatments, or if there is an issue that needs a different type of therapy, we may refer you to one of our colleagues in the Bideford Therapies team.

Do you help treat chronic illness?

Yes absolutely! Please get in touch with us prior to booking an appointment, this way we can make sure we are able to help you.  We will email a number of health forms to you before your appointment will allow you to explain in detail your condition.

How should I prepare for manual therapy treatment and osteopathy?

In order for us to ensure we are delivering the most appropriate treatment we simply ask that  you complete the health forms that we send by email prior to your first appointment.

For the treatment, we recommend loose casual clothing for your comfort, and you may want to leave jewellery at home if it is appropriate.  No other preparation is needed.

What should I expect from a counselling session?

At your first counselling session we will ask you a number of questions in order to assess your issues and consider what type of support you will require, as there are many different approaches that can be taken, depending on the issues raised.  The sessions are led by your needs, as every session is tailored to the individual, so we will advise on the methods we will use and the level of active engagement that may be required to support your recovery.

For counselling to be successful, you will require more than one session.  We therefore ask that you are prepared to undertake a number of sessions in the preceding weeks.  Once your issues are manageable we will ease you from counselling with tools that help you to navigate challenges you face in your daily life.

What type of issues does your counsellor help with?

Our counsellor will help with a wide variety of challenges that people face.  These include (but are not restricted to):

Anxiety, depression, relationship issues, stress, anger, trauma, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), grief (bereavement), sleep disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD), addiction, eating disorders, phobias and general sadness.

We will not turn away those with a diagnosed clinical psychiatric disorder such as schizophrenia, severe autistic disorders or functional brain injury however, we will discuss an appropriate intervention route if issues arise that require clinical psychiatric intervention.
